Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman – The LitRPG That Ruined My Sleep Schedule (Full Review)
Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5 – yes, it’s that good) Format: Book / Audiobook (Audible – get the audiobook, trust me) Series: Ongoing (book 6 out now, no end in sight)
If you’re dipping into litRPG for the first time—or even if you’ve read a dozen—Dungeon Crawler Carl is the one that’ll hook you. It’s not just “game in real life”; it’s a blood-soaked, laugh-out-loud nightmare where the stakes are actually high and the jokes hit harder than the monsters.
The setup? Carl’s a normal guy—works a dead-end job, lives with his girlfriend—until aliens invade Earth, turn it into a reality-TV dungeon, and force everyone into a “game” where dying means dying for real. He teams up with Donut, his ex’s cat, who suddenly talks and gets stat boosts. Yeah, it’s weird. And yeah, it’s perfect.
What makes it stand out:
- Humor that doesn’t suck. Carl’s deadpan sarcasm is gold—think Deadpool meets Final Fantasy. The cat’s snarky one-liners? Chef’s kiss.
- No power-fantasy BS. Carl’s not “chosen” or OP from day one—he’s just smart, scrappy, and lucky. Every level-up feels earned.
- World-building on crack. The dungeon’s a maze of traps, loot, and alien sponsors who bet on your death. Feels like a twisted mix of Survivor and Mario Kart.
- Pacing that won’t let go. Short chapters, cliffhangers every 10 pages—impossible to put down.
Audiobook bonus: Jeff Hays (Soundbooth Theater) voices Carl like he’s your best friend who just got drafted into hell. Donut’s voice? Pure evil glee. It’s worth the Audible credit—people literally say they finished book 1 in one sitting.
Downsides?
- It’s gory. Like, “I need to shower after this” gory. If blood and body parts bother you, skip it.
- The romance is… minimal. Carl’s more about survival than smooches. Fine by me, but if you want love triangles, look elsewhere.
- Book 1 ends on a banger—then you realize you’re in for six (and counting). Budget accordingly.
Who it’s for:
- Fans of progression fantasy who want laughs, not lectures.
- Anyone who likes dark comedy—think Hitchhiker’s Guide meets Saw.
- Audiobook junkies—Hays makes it a full-on experience.
Bottom line: Dungeon Crawler Carl isn’t just “good litRPG”—it’s the benchmark. If you’re starting your journey, start here. You’ll thank me when you’re up at 3 a.m. reading book 3.
